Sleep apnea is a very common disorder, and anyone can get it. But it’s far more common in men than women. If you or someone close to you is coping with sleep apnea, call us at SLEEPwell in Longview.
The most common type of the condition is obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA for short. This is characterized by a blockage of the airway during sleep, which cuts off oxygen flow to the brain.
The cause of OSA is not known. Researchers think one of the reasons it’s more common in men is that men generally have larger, more collapsable airways than women. Differences in brain structure may also play a role.
