Sleep Apnea and Gender

Sleep apnea is a very common disorder, and anyone can get it. But it’s far more common in men than women. If you or someone close to you is coping with sleep apnea, call us at SLEEPwell in Longview.

The most common type of the condition is obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA for short. This is characterized by a blockage of the airway during sleep, which cuts off oxygen flow to the brain.

The cause of OSA is not known. Researchers think one of the reasons it’s more common in men is that men generally have larger, more collapsable airways than women. Differences in brain structure may also play a role.

The Dangers of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea can pose some very serious risks to health. These include:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke

People with sleep apnea may also have daytime fatigue and mood swings.

At SLEEPwell in Longview, sleep apnea and its treatment is our specialty. We’ve helped patients throughout Gladewater, Hallsville, and New Diana. If you or someone you love has sleep issues, please give us a call to schedule an appointment today!
